Kendrick Meek Responds To Florida's April Unemployment Figures

Miami Gardens, Fla. - U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek responded to today's news that Florida's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 12 percent in April.

"Today's announcement is a stark reminder that Floridians are still hurting. We are all bracing for the effects of the oil spill that is endangering Florida's tourism and fishing industries. And once again, Florida's job recovery threatens to be stalled by big business run amuck.

"This week, the senate was finally successful in passing financial reforms that will protect middle class Floridians even as Republican leaders took the side of Wall Street firms who contributed to the 2008 financial collapse. But these same Republican leaders blocked an attempt to hold BP accountable for the Gulf oil spill, choosing to protect Big Oil instead of Florida's economy.

"Floridians don't need politicians who are intent on cozying up to BP and Wall Street banks. They want leaders who are willing to tackle big issues rather than stand for big business. My fight has always been to get middle class Floridians back to work and I will continue working hard to get Florida's economy moving again."
