BEE Releases Comprehensive Guide to HBCUs (2396 hits)

IRVING, TEXAS —August 21, 2009—Black Educational Events, LLC (BEE), a privately owned events and publishing company located in Irving, Texas, today announced that it has released a comprehensive guide that will bring greater awareness of the rich traditions and educational opportunities available at the nation's 104 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The guide, HBCU Today, is a 300-page resource book that offers feature articles on the history and future of HBCUs, black college culture and campus life, and top academic programs such as Florida A&M University's School of Journalism, Howard University's School of Divinity and Meharry Medical College's School of Medicine.

Detailed profiles of all 104 HBCUs, including histories, academic and athletic programs, student organizations, tuition costs and contact information are also provided. Guidelines for selecting and applying to HBCUs, lists of scholarship resources and college tours, and a geographic locator are included as well.

The guide is supplemented by reproductions from The Kinsey Collection, one of the most notable private collections of African-American art in the country. Highlighted in the guide, too, are notable HBCU graduates, including media mogul Oprah Winfrey (Tennessee State University), Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison (Howard University), former Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton (Jackson State University) and critically acclaimed actor Samuel L. Jackson (Morehouse College).

"Minorities are experiencing high school dropout rates in excess of 50 percent in some of our major cities, particularly on the West Coast," said John Fleming, founder and CEO of BEE. "Those students that do graduate are having a more difficult time finding a university they can afford and where their culture is appreciated. Our HBCUs have served the social, cultural and educational needs of America's young men and women for the last 170 years, and we feel this guide will help spread the message that these great institutions are still a viable choice for today's youth."

HBCU Today is not sold in stores. To purchase copies, go to http://www.hbcutoday.net.
