Predominantly White Sorority Wins National Sprite Step Off Competition (7073 hits)

If you haven’t heard by now, the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha are the baddest steppers in the land this year.

ZTA, a White sorority, pulled off a major at the Sprite Step-Off Challenge over the weekend. The newcomers beat out Black greeks from Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Omega Psi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma to take first place and a check for $100,000.

UPDATE: Scoring discrepancy leads to 2 sorority winners

Although stepping is largely a revered tradition among Black fraternities and sororities, it’s not like the judges just handed Zeta Tau Alpha the top prize. From their initial try-out to the finals, those girls came hard. Of course it doesn’t hurt that their stepmistress has a background in choreography.

“They blew us away,” said Rob Hardy, the producer of an MTV 2 series about the Step-Off. He told S2S that after seeing the sorority’s audition there was no way they couldn’t have let the ladies compete in the big show.

In case you’re wondering how some of the NPHC organizations did, watch the videos below.

I thought the same thing. That is why I posted it. I have to give it up to my fellow CAU greeks though. They represented my alma mater well. :)

only a matter of time - rarely anything remains the same or totally predictable. Forces those that compete, in this arena, to bring a tighter game (I guess).

It was an 'A' for effort but the competition must have been kind of wack because they didnt do anything amazing in my speculation. I need to see the other performances.

Music, dancing, hairstyles, lips, big butts, tanned skinned, black men, what else are we gonna allow them to take from us. Now, let's sit back and watch the white girls capitalize off of steppin' in a way no African-American greeks ever have. As part of the old school generation, I must say black greeks everywhere ought to be ashamed!

I have a few questions; number one who were the judges, number 2 who taught them A-Phi-A steps, and number three was the booty thang at the end was that for the black male judges if there were any or the brothers in the cheap seats?

Deltas and AKA's hold you proud, beautiful heads high, you have nothing to be ashamed of. This was for MTV2, great television and nothing else. Opps I forgot, a $100,000 robbery in front of thousands.

What I saw here reminds me of the first time I saw white people on Soul Train claiming to be dancing!

Yeah they did a good job but nothing spectacular. It was the shock factor mostly b/c they were white. But the def won the competition b/c after seeing all the other competitors videos on YouTube, i was not impressed. They wouldnt have won at my school , i tell you that much. BUT i am glad that they appreciate our culture enough to step, i see it like this, they must love our culture and so are trying to be like us and step how we do. Those greeks in that competition need to step up their game REAL DEAL.

If whites want to compete in "black" competitions so be it. Remember, whites say the same thing about blacks and other groups competing in their "competitions" and when they lose, they call it some affirmative action plot. Anyone who is drinking the Haterade, need to staop the hate, congratulate, then particpate. We need to step up the game, just as whites need to step their game and stop crying reverse discrimination (which I think is B.S. since their is no such thing as reverse discriminate as it means to do the opposite of what the individual did such as discriminate). Anyway, congrats to girls for breaking the barriers and we just need to step it up. Two quotes to remember:

"The only way to get smarter is by playing a smarter opponent." for the whites, they are doing so. Blacks should do the same.

and

"When living in a glass house, don’t throw stones." The quote speaks for itself.

Well, then place in the rules that only Black frats and sororities join the competition. As for whites copying blacks, Sharron, you have some points, but, don't forget that every other cutlture including blacks have been doing the same thing as well. The Japanese are well known for taking other ideas, modifying it and calling their own. And let us not forget the music industry with the many karaoke style "artists" in the game. I think most of HBCUs student and alumni have seen the black leather "outfits", "sunglasses" and moves time and time again. The only exception, this time it was whites wearing them. Overall, it is what it is, step up or step off!
