(BOWIE, Md.)— When Victoria Little walked across Bowie State University’s commencement stage to receive her bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1980, she had no idea that she would receive a master’s degree in Organizational Communications from her alma mater 30 years later. With a 4.0 grade point average, 54 year-old Little serves as an example to prospective students desiring to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies, despite their age or the amount of time they have been out of college.
Little returned to Bowie State in 2008 to become Coordinator of Recruitment, after working in college recruitment for over 20 years at Howard University. The position allows Little to meet and talk with high school students locally and throughout the region about the value of higher education and the advantages of attending Bowie State, the first Historically Black Institution in Maryland.
“I love working with students and like to stress to them their potential to be high achievers,” said Little. “In 2009, our recruitment team coordinated the first event at Bowie State to attract high school students with high academic achievements and the event gave us an opportunity to make them aware of the BSU scholarships and Honors Program that are available to them. As much as I enjoy encouraging students, I can honestly say that they also encourage me to continue to grow and re-invent myself.”
Little is a native of Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and daughter of well-known community activist, Ella Creech-Peete, president of the Metropolitan Women Democratic Club and past president of the National Federation of Democratic Women.
“Victoria Little’s accomplishments are especially significant because by example she has proven you can master the balancing act of managing your time as a full-time professional while investing the time and effort to succeed in the classroom,” stated interim provost and vice president for academic affairs Karen Johnson Shaheed.
