Doris Ann Dearing Johnson a native of Aberdeen, Miss., Class of 1968, was sworn in as President of the Texas Medical Association Alliance, May 1, at the 93rd Session. She is the first African American to lead the organization. Witnessing her swearing in was a packed ballroom at the Fort Worth Convention Center, Fort Worth, TX. Over 700 Texas Physicians, Spouses, Family, Friends and leaders of several organizations of which she holds membership and her church family looked on as she accepted the reigns of the TMA Alliance. The TMA Alliance supports the Texas Medical Association (TMA), Texas Medical Association Foundation (TMAF); Texas Political Action Committee (TEXPAC). The TMA Alliance promotes the “Be Wise, Immunize,” Hard Hats for Little Heads; the Minority ScholarshipProgram and First Tuesdays during Texas Legislative Sessions. She has a 25 Member Board and 4 Staff members.
Johnson will lead the 7,000 member organization for 2010-2011. She embarked upon the path to this position while a student at Rust. Graduating with honors and participating in the Exchange Student Program at the University of Iowa, Iowa City IA and subsequently returning to the University and obtaining a Masters Degree of Social Work in 1977. Dearing Johnson represented Rust College in the 2003 Inauguration Ceremony of Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Chancellor Victor J. Boschini, Parade of Colleges and Universities.
Doris holds the proud distinction of serving as the first African American to serve as 83rd President of the Tarrant County Medical Society Alliance in 2003-2004 and the first to serve as 1997 President of the Parent Teacher Association of the over 2,500 Student Body of Martin High School of Arlington, TX. She has held numerous positions with the local and state alliance, which propelled her to the office of presidency.
