Harris-Stowe State University will celebrate the one-year anniversary of its state-of-the-art William L. Clay, Sr. Early Childhood Development/Parenting Education Center (ECC) on August 4, 2010, at 6 p.m.
The celebration will feature remarks from HSSU President Dr. Henry Givens, Jr. and Director of the Early Childhood Center Dr. Patricia Johnson. “This has been a wonderful and fruitful year for the Early Childhood Center,” said Dr. Johnson. “On August 24, 2009, we opened the doors to 15 children and as we celebrate our first anniversary, we will do so with the sights and sounds of 67 happy little ones from 12 weeks to 5 years laughing, learning and having fun. …Our first 'birthday' might bring a few tears as we will lose three of our 5-year-olds to kindergarten placements. These three will constitute our first ‘graduating’ class from the center. Our children, parents, advisory council members and staff are looking forward, with great anticipation, to an evening when we can share with the general public the work of our children and our home of one year.”
Clay Advisory Council members Keithen Stallings, whose child attends the center, and Jan Ashbrook, project director of the St. Louis Mental Health Board, will speak in addition to Wendell Kimbrough, CEO of Area Resources for Community and Human Services (ARCHS) and Dr. Gregory Knott, parent of an ECC child.
Following, ECC Family Life Specialist LaTasha Milton and ECC Teacher Angelique Bey will present the center’s graduates, Makayla A. Pitts, Meshach E. Pitts and Mikayla V. Sanders, and will wish them farewell as they advance to kindergarten.
Attendees of the celebration may take a guided tour of the facility, and light refreshments will be available afterward. The one-year anniversary celebration will be held inside the center at 10 N. Compton Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63103, near the front entrance, and the public is encouraged to attend.
The 50,000 square-foot building meets the needs of four learning groups: young children, young parents, professionals in the field of Early Childhood Education and HSSU Early Childhood Education majors. The program is designed to encourage healthy child development during a child’s fastest-growing life period. The University is on task to earn gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the building, which has many environmentally friendly aspects that make it unlike any other child care facility in the nation.
