
Judge Greg Mathis to Keynote 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Celebration Kick-off Program at Harris-Stowe.
Judge Greg Mathis, nationally recognized as an advocate for justice and as an award-winning television court judge, will serve as the keynote speaker for the 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Celebration Kick-off program at Harris-Stowe State University on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
From an incarcerated youth to revered judge, Greg Mathis’ life story brings inspiration to millions who watch him on his award-winning court show, Judge Mathis.
Judge Mathis’ public service career began more than 25 years ago. As a college student, he led Free South Africa and voter registration campaigns on campus. Following graduation, he worked for Detroit city councilman Clyde Cleveland and continued to work as an advocate for equal justice with Reverend Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH, which he now serves as chairman. Mathis is also on the national boards of the NAACP and the Morehouse School of Medicine.
Demonstrating a commitment to youths, Judge Mathis opened a community center in Detroit, his hometown, and he founded Young Adults Asserting Themselves (YAAT), a nonprofit agency responsible for providing thousands of adolescents with job training, career and entrepreneur opportunities, and college admissions assistance.
Judge Mathis has made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the TODAY show, Larry King Live, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and he provides legal advice to more than 3 million listeners on The Steve Harvey Morning Show and via his website,
www.askjudgemathis.com. Numerous newspapers, magazines and television networks have recognized Judge Mathis for his accomplishments. He has received keys to cities from government officials and is the recipient of honorary doctorates from both Florida A&M University and Eastern Michigan University. Now the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Celebration Commission of Missouri will honor Judge Mathis with the Chairman’s Award at the 2011 kick-off program.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Celebration Kick-off program will take place on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 6:30 p.m., in the Main Auditorium of Harris-Stowe’s Dr. Henry Givens, Jr. Administration Building. The event is free and open to the public. A commemorative 25th anniversary program and fan set will be available for a $5 donation, to assist with expenses associated with the kick-off program. Immediately following the program, there will be a reception, featuring Steve Schankman and the Fabulous Motown Revue, on the ground floor of the Dr. Henry Givens Jr. Administration Building.
The MLK Kick-off Program is hosted by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Celebration Commission, Dr. Henry Givens, Jr., chairman. The commission, which was established in 1985, consists of governor-appointed members throughout the state of Missouri, who come together to host events that preserve Dr. King’s legacy. Since its inception, all State Kick-off Programs have been held at Harris-Stowe State University.
