The Department of Landscape Architecture in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) at the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Landscape Architecture to start in Fall 2026. URI is the State's flagship land- and sea-grant research university, located in Kingston, Rhode Island, a beautiful seaside community well connected by car, bus, and rail. URI is approximately 40 minutes from Providence, an hour from Boston, and 3 hours from New York City.
In Fall 2026, URI is leveraging the departments of Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Geosciences to create a new department, Department of Earth Sciences, Planning and Design, to create a hub where faculty tackle urgent community and environmental challenges through innovative, inclusive, and resilient approaches. The departments consist of 13 full-time faculty members engaged in teaching and research focused on understanding, restoring, and sustainably managing Earth's dynamic systems and landscapes. Our work combines geophysical analysis, hydrologic and water-quality modeling, and climate science with sustainable, community-based design to address pressing environmental issues such as climate change impacts, coastal hazards, and equitable access to green spaces. Our departments have over 140 undergraduates majoring in Landscape Architecture, Water and Climate Science, or Geology and Geological Oceanography.
We seek individuals with demonstrated commitment to teaching, experiential learning, and student success in Landscape Architecture at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Priority will be given to candidates who show a commitment to an inclusive culture and community through pedagogical practices and public engagement and who would contribute to URI's goals in these areas. These positions are full-time, non-tenure-track, one-year appointments beginning in August 2026, with the expectation of yearly renewal. The position is covered under the URI/AAUP contract.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach a full instructional load (12 credits or the equivalent, as needed) of core landscape architecture courses per semester.

  • Provide undergraduate advising within the landscape architecture program.

  • Implement inclusive, evidence-based teaching and learning approaches to ensure the academic success of a diverse student population.

  • Participate in outreach activities and departmental efforts to support the strategic plans of the institution and the College of the Environment and Life Sciences.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

1. BLA or MLA accredited professional degree obtained at time of starting employment.

2. A relevant master's degree (MLA or other) or equivalent professional experience leading to landscape architecture licensure.

3. Evidence of excellence in teaching undergraduate landscape architecture courses.

4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups and populations.

5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills in English.

6. Commitment to engaging in professional service and outreach, demonstrated by participation in committees, organizations, or other activities.

7. Demonstrated skills in design and technology.

PREFERRED:

1. PhD in a related field such as Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or Planning.

2. Demonstrated ability to teach a wide range of landscape architecture classes, such as CAD, construction, surveying, graphics, design, and sustainability.

3. Professional experience in landscape architecture and/or planning; eligibility or progress toward professional licensure (RLA, RA, AICP) or other certifications.

4. Evidence of mentoring undergraduate students.

5. Knowledge of and/or experience with community-based organizations or Cooperative Extension programs.

6. Demonstrated ability to work as a team and/or in a complex academic environment.
