Miami Gardens, Fla. - U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek released the following statement regarding President Obama's speech on NASA's future in Cape Canaveral today:
"Canceling Constellation's manned shuttle program means Florida will lose out in jobs, technical expertise, and the pride of knowing America's gateway to space lies on Florida shores," said Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. " Thousands of Florida jobs hinge on a rejuvenated NASA spaceflight program. I was just in Brevard County and the people I met, from NASA scientists to local small business owners, told me how concerned they were with the original decision. While the president's remarks today were a step in the right direction, the true test of this new plan's success will come in the local jobs it creates and maintains and the boost it gives to the Space Coast economy. I will continue to fight for good jobs like these that can provide the foundation for smart economic growth in this state."
