http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpoliti... Kendrick Meek arrived in Port-au-Prince today, three months after the earthquake devastated much of the nation. Meek -- whose district includes more Haitian-Americans than any other -- was the first member of Congress to visit Haiti after the quake and is spending two days meeting with Haitian government officials and workers.
The schedule today includes meetings with President Rene Preval, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, and U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth Merten; briefings with USAID and the American Red Cross; a site visit with Project Medishare; and trips to a textile factory and local orphanage, Eglise St. Claire. On Saturday, he will visit an "internally displaced persons" camp and resettlement site, as well as meet with civil society and private sector officials.
Meek will host a "How to do Business with USAID" procurement meeting Monday at Florida International University. The federal agency will update its Haiti relief efforts, as well as discuss how small and medium enterprises or non-profits can get involved.
