MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - As Planned Parenthood organizations rally throughout Florida on Thursday, Kendrick Meek renewed his strong opposition to HB 1143, a mean-spirited measure requiring pregnant women to pay for an ultrasound before obtaining an abortion.
With conservative Republican Speaker Marco Rubio in strong support of the anti-privacy legislation, the lone pro-choice candidate in this U.S. Senate race Kendrick Meek challenged lifelong anti-choice Republican Governor Charlie Crist to veto this draconian bill.
"Governor Crist is already late in speaking out forcefully against this horrendous bill. It requires a full and complete veto, and I challenge Governor Crist to stand firm against this anti-woman legislation. The governor must do the right thing. But his near complete silence makes any potential veto a decision driven by politics, not personal conviction," said Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.
With the nomination of Elena Kagan sure to reopen the national discussion on a woman's right to privacy, only Kendrick Meek has spoken out in support of the presidential selection.
Asked Kendrick, an early supporter of Justice Sonia Sotomayor's nomination, "Governor Crist and Speaker Rubio stood together to oppose Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Will they stand together again in opposing Solicitor General Elena Kagan's nomination?"
Kendrick Meek will face two anti-choice, anti-privacy candidates in the senate race, lifelong Republicans Charlie Crist and conservative Marco Rubio.
