MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - Kendrick Meek received the endorsement today of the Alliance for Retired Americans in Orlando. In their endorsement, the Alliance highlighted Kendrick's fight for health care reform that puts seniors and middle class Floridians first.
"I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Alliance for Retired Americans. Across this state, I've met seniors and retirees who are feeling the effects of Florida's economic downturn. Rising health care costs affect seniors more than any other group. My fight has always been to ensure all seniors have access to affordable care and low cost prescriptions, even if that meant getting on the bad side of big health insurance companies. Now, more than ever, Floridians need leaders who will tackle big issues and fight for them, not politicians who put their own political careers or their own philosophy first," said Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.
"Throughout his career, Kendrick has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the quality of life for older Americans. His leadership on issues such as fighting Social Security privatization and strengthening the Social Security and Medicare systems exhibits that commitment. In addition, his support for comprehensive health care reform that includes Medicare improvements which benefits seniors -- not insurance and drug companies -- as well as the need for stronger retirement and pension security, and quality long term and nursing home care all make his candidacy one our members can enthusiastically support," said the Alliance for Retired Americans in their endorsement.
Kendrick is the only candidate in this race who consistently supported and fought for the historic health care reform bill. Both Speaker Rubio and Governor Crist stood against this bill. The governor even went so far as to publicly call on Kendrick to vote against this important reform.
The Alliance for Retired Americans is an organization representing four million retirees, older Americans, and community activists including more than 200,000 members in Florida. At today's endorsement, Kendrick met with Alliance members and hosted a roundtable discussion on senior issues and health care.
