MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. -- Kendrick Meek released the following statement after Republicans in the U.S. Senate successfully blocked an extension of unemployment benefits to Floridians struggling to find work:
"Yesterday, Republican leaders in the Senate blocked legislation that would have extended unemployment benefits for 119,200 Florida workers who have lost their jobs. It's an absolute disgrace. Middle-class Florida families are struggling through these tough times, and Republican leaders in Washington just aren't listening. They'd rather take their queues from Big Banks, BP and Wall Street.
"Floridians need leaders who aren't afraid to tackle big issues -- Democrats who will fight for the middle-class, not billionaires who profited of the misery of Florida families or politicians who will say and do anything to get elected. My fight has always been to bring jobs and opportunities to the state and to turn Florida's economy around. In the Senate, I will continue to fight for middle-class families struggling in these tough times."
