A poll just completed for Kendrick's campaign by the Feldman Group reveals that Kendrick is now in a statistical dead heat with his opponent, billionaire Jeff Greene. Among all likely primary voters, Kendrick has the support of 36 percent while Greene has 35 percent support. Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre wins 8 percent with 20 percent of voters undecided.
Kendrick has the edge among those primary voters who are most likely to participate in the election. Kendrick leads by six points among those voters who have participated in each of the last four Democratic primaries and by four points among those who voted in the August 2008 primary election. Kendrick also enjoys a double digit advantage in the four Congressional districts with contested U.S. House primaries. Grassroots turnout will be critical, and Kendrick is running a grassroots campaign. Higher turnout in those districts give Kendrick a real boost.
We are very encouraged by these results. Kendrick is the lone real Democrat in this race. He is a fighter for middle-class Florida families and is working harder everyday than his opponents. One week ago, Kendrick launched his television campaign to introduce himself - Kendrick the state trooper, the skycap who worked for tips, the legislator, and family man - to Florida voters. That presence on television will steadily climb as we approach primary day.
We have aggressively confronted the scurrilous attacks leveled by Jeff Greene who has launched a $10 million-plus television-laden campaign full of distortions and lies. Voters don't trust Greene and see him as the Wall Street insider that he is - an individual who bet the housing market would collapse and got rich off of other people's suffering. Greene became a billionaire as middle-class Floridians lost their homes, if not the equity in their homes. That is a disqualifying resume for a candidate running in the Democratic primary in Florida.
Jeff Greene is in trouble, and he knows it. His campaign has entered a toxic phase and the lies being spewed from his camp are wild and never ending. Their statements are simultaneously unbelievable and not believable. Expect Greene to continue his downward spiral with a campaign built upon a negative message and massive distortions for the duration of the race.
Meanwhile, Kendrick will continue his fight for middle-class Floridians and remains the lone 'Real Democrat' in this primary and general.
These results are from a survey of 800 registered Democrats who have voted in at least one prior primary and who say their chances of voting this year are 50-50 or better. The sample was a cluster sample from the Catalist data base. Professional interviewers conducted the survey between August 1 and August 3. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
