DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Former President Bill Clinton endorsed U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Miami, as the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate during the first of three appearances in South Florida on Monday.
Clinton and Meek got off to a late start, taking the stage in Delray Beach shortly after 6 p.m.
"I love Kendrick Meek," Clinton said. "I'd be here for him if I was the only voter he had in the entire country. I don't care about that. But I also believe with all my heart that he be the next United States senator from Florida."
Clinton credited Meek with "taking the lead" against home mortgage fraud and preserving Florida's tourism trade by opposing offshore drilling.
"He's the only person you can vote for who's actually ever gotten anything done in Washington," Clinton said.
The former president was stumping with Meek, using the high-profile event as an incentive to get people to vote early.
Early voters at Delray Beach City Hall got free priority tickets for the event.
Meek and his opponent, Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene, had their final debate Sunday before next week's primary.
Clinton was also scheduled to attend rallies with Meek in Davie and Miami.
