Dr. Linda Beito Presents "Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power"
Dr. Linda Beito, Chair of the Department of Social Sciences, Pre-Law Advisor and Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at Stillman College, will present the book "Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power" on Feb. 22, 2011, at 7 p.m., in Stinson Auditorium, on the Stillman College Campus as part of the MLK Realizing the Dream Spring Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. Beito co-authored the book with her husband, Dr. David T. Beito, professor of history at The University of Alabama.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Realizing the Dream Committee exists to raise consciousness about injustice and promote human equality, peace, and social justice by creating educational and cultural opportunities for growth, empowerment, and social change so that every person may experience the bounty of life's abundant possibilities.
T.R.M. Howard, a wealthy black planter and surgeon, led massive rallies and successful boycotts for equal rights in rural Mississippi. However, his place in history has been overlooked. Drawing from dozens of interviews with Howard's friends and contemporaries, as well as FBI files, court documents and private papers, the authors present a portrait of a complicated leader, iconoclastic businessman and tireless activist.
Dr. Beito has called Stillman home since 1999. She received her doctorate from the University of Alabama (1996) in Political Science and holds a Master's degree in Criminal Justice.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit
