Allen University is hosting its first African American Jamboree Jubilee: Genealogy Roadshow Celebration on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. The event will be held in the John Hurst Adams Gymnatorium located at 1517 Pine Street in Columbia, South Carolina. The event is to raise awareness about the historic preservation of African American Heritage from 5,000 B.C. to 1965.
The Genealogy Roadshow is a national event and recognizable from Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Allen University will engage the community to learn about African American experiences from around the world to the streets of Columbia, South Carolina, via exhibits and lectures. Light refreshments will be served.
The African American Jamboree Jubilee: Genealogy Roadshow is two part event consisting of:
Phase one - Exhibit Hall viewings of: the African American Experience and the Black Church in America, Agriculture, Briggs vs. Elliot, Baseball, Soul Food, Vintage Cookbooks, Lorraine Motel Exhibit, Religious Organizations, Military, Arts & Music, Famous Black Military Units/Soldiers, Freedom Riders Display, Civil Rights Exhibits, Early Black Undertakers Exhibit, Vintage African American Newspapers, The Three Underground Railroads, The State of Kansas Exhibit, Texas Comes to South Carolina Exhibit, Louisiana Exhibit, Huge BBQ Exhibit, Nancy Green Pancakes Exhibit, What’s Cooking with Uncle Sam Exhibit, American Cancer Society/American Heart Association.
Phase two – Lecture Series consisting of: African Americans and consumer genetics/DNA, Tracing our African American Ancestry, How to Preserve a Legacy, the Health of Soul Food- Who was John?, How to Locate Your African American Black Ancestors Using Death Certificates and Death Information, Careers in Anthropology and Using Inquest Reports, The Frist Underground Railroad, Family of Origin Issues, Ethnicity/Minority Issues, Quilt Presentations, the Mistakes of Working for Cash Wages, and The Rights of Children of Single Parents to Estates/Survivors Benefits.
