Renowned Broadway choreographer and stage director Patdro Harris will speak at ASU on Friday, Sept. 30, at 3:30 p.m. in the Leila Barlow Theatre. His visit is sponsored by ASU’s Center for the Study of Being. An ASU alumnus, Harris hopes to engage and challenge ASU's students by generating awareness of the arts and a passion for dance.
The event is free and open to the public.
“ASU is fortunate to have an award-winning choreographer, director and performer, who is one of our own, to speak to our students,” said Dr. Tommie “Tonea” Stewart, dean, College of Visual and Performing Arts.
The Atlanta native, who once led the ASU Marching Hornets as Drum Major, has traveled the world as a choreographer and lead dancer for singer Stevie Wonder and has worked with such artists as The SOS Band, T.C. Carson, Daryl Coley, Yolanda Adams and India Arie. His talents also were showcased as Choreographer and Movement Specialist in Toni Morrison's world premiere opera “Margaret Garner.” Harris choreographed the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit “A Raisin in the Sun,” starring Sean Combs and Phylicia Rashad.
His works have received accolades from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Star Tribune Minneapolis and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and many more.
He also served as choreographer, artistic consultant and movement director with the The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Broadway's Royal Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Studio Theatre D.C, City Theatre of Pittsburgh, Minneapolis Mixed Blood Theatre, Jomandi Productions, The National Black Theatre Festival, Guthrie Theater and The National Black Arts Festival.
Harris, who graduated from ASU with a Bachelor of Arts degree, is the recipient of the 1996 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Choreography and has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the same award. He received a 2002 Drammy Award for Best Choreography and the 2007 Dance Ministry Magazine's Trailblazer Award for Dance Choreographer of the Year. He also has received a 2009, 2010 and 2011 Giorgee Award for Best Director and Best Show, Atlanta’s top theatre award, The 2009 Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Choreography,and the 2013 Suzi for Outstanding Director of a Play.
