A WALK IN MY SHOES follows the lives of four talented and tormented young adults who have been carousing since they were toddlers at KING OF GLORY Church of the Living God and Community Center. O’Neal is an overachieving, closeted preacher’s kid running from his own truths. Maseo just did time for another drug possession charge. Kara is a brash transgender woman with an impeccable shoe collection afforded by her new occupation, escorting. And there’s Bonnie, whose haunting secrets could rock the foundations of her childhood friendships forever.

Blending hip-hop, R&B, gospel, poetry, sizzling choreography, a dynamic ensemble of actors and a live orchestra, A WALK IN MY SHOES highlights the complicated challenges that urban millennials face every day.

The purpose of the C.H.I.P (Collegiate Health Improvement via Prevention) project is to provide primarily African-American college students and community members, aged 18 to 24, with education and activities that will help them avoid HIV, hepatitis, and substance abuse, in addition to other risky behaviors. The project provides evidence-based curriculum instruction and related services including HIV and HCV testing, and follow up counseling.

Johnson C. Smith University's C.H.I.P. project was made possible by a federal grant from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities.

The musical event A WALK IN MY SHOES will coincide with National Women & Girls HIV Awareness Day (March 10th).

"This production was inspired by the brilliant and courageous young people I served for 8 years as Program Director of a federally-funded HIV/AIDS community testing center in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has always pained me that nearly 70% of all those diagnosed with HIV in North Carolina are African-American. Amongst that percentage, 13-24 year olds of color make up the majority; these statistics are true nationally as well. As a playwright, I was compelled to create a staged work that would explore the grim reality behind these disturbing numbers." - Jermaine Nakia Lee
