As part of Wiley College's commitment to the NAIA Champions of Character program, it recognizes student-athletes that have exhibited a high level of scholarship, sportsmanship, integrity responsibility and community service.
Baseball player Darian Fleming (SO/Beaumont, TX) is the fifth athlete to be recognized in the 2016-17 school year.
Fleming is in his sophomore season with the Wildcats and is a charter member of the Wiley College Wildcat 3.0 Club. Head coach Kendrick Biggs said Fleming is a very hard worker on and off the field.
"He is respected by all of his teammates and his peers," Biggs said. "He always takes charge and we as a coaching staff feel very comfortable leaving him in charge. He has very good sportsmanship in everything he does. He is also a leader in the community working countless hours of community service."
Fleming has greeted and mentored students at Sam Houston Middle School. He helped students move in to their dormitories during curb-side service on August 20. He helped paint walls in the new Fred Long Student Union Building during Home Depot Retool Your School on October 22. He was part of a group that participated in the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign during the holiday season.
On the field, Fleming plays in the outfield and pitches. This season he has made five appearances and is one of three pitchers to record a victory in the early part of the 2017 season. At the plate, Fleming has one hit in three at-bats.
