Alabama State University Student Receives White House Honor (1395 hits)

A student at Alabama State University has been chosen nationwide and named as an HBCU White House All-Star by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's).

David King, a native of Gary, Indiana and a senior at ASU (who is majoring in political science with a minor in public administration), has been awarded this prestigious national honor.

“It is an honor to be selected as a 2017-2018 White House All-Star Student Ambassador, but to me it's not about the title or the honor, it's about the impact and the need for change," King said. "I am going to use this position as yet another opportunity to influence change in the lives of my peers.”
Comprised of undergraduate, graduate and professional students, the "All-Stars" are recognized for their accomplishments in academics, leadership and civic engagement.

According to information posted by the HBCU All-Star staff, the position that King was named to is considered by the Federal Government and White House to be among the highest ranking student leader positions in the nation, which gives its student-leaders the opportunity to advocate and represent their peer's opinions to the government.

King will serve as an ambassador and provide outreach opportunities and communicate to other students the value of receiving a good education.

Through social media and his relationships with community-based organizations, King will share proven practices that support opportunities for all young people to realize their educational and career potential. He will participate in the White House HBCU National Conference, national and regional events and webinars on a wide range of disciplines that support a spirit of engagement and personal and professional development.

“Every moment and resource at my disposal will be used to represent and uplift ASU and the Hornet Nation," King added.

Dr. Davida Haywood, vice president of ASU's Student Affairs division, said she is excited about this opportunity for yet another one of the University's students.

"We are certainly proud of David King, as he accepts this honor -- not only for himself, but for the Hornet Nation,” Haywood said.

She added that “Given that ASU has had three White House HBCU All-Stars named within the past few years; Mr. King's selection not only speaks to his performance in the classroom, but to his leadership involvement outside of it."

King has had many firsts in his collegiate career, including authoring his first book, "Crucifixion: Living the Christ Life, Not the Christian Religion," which is set to be released in late October.
Other academic honors and memberships include being a Spring 2014 initiate of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, which was founded at the University of Alabama; induction into the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society and the Sigma Alpha Pi National Society for Leadership and Success.

King plans to attend the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy to earn his master’s in Public Policy. He hopes to continue his involvement in public service and the government sector.
“My motto is ‘Keep Moving Forward,’ which comes from my favorite Walt Disney quote,” King said. “It sums up my personality and beliefs of the power of man to make all the difference, if we try.”
