On August 2, 2017, Monica Dorsey was selected as a 2017 White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, HBCU All-Star Student Ambassador. Out of an applicant pool of over 500 students, she was chosen as 1 of 53 students to serve.
Monica, a Garland, TX native, is a senior Social Work major with a 3.8 GPA. Not only does she excel in the classroom, but also on the basketball court; Monica is the team captain of the Texas College Women’s Basketball Team. To add to her heavy involvement, she also is the FCA President on campus. Somehow, Monica still finds time to volunteer with the East Texas Mentoring Alliance and Gospel Village of Tyler. During her holiday breaks she returns home to speak with middle school students about the importance of education. Monica states “I want to inspire the next generation in a positive way, by educating them to see that they are more than their circumstances. It's important to find your own path, be different than the crowd, stay drug-free, and anxiety–free in college. Dream BIG and ultimately be the change you want to see in the world.”
The HBCU All-Stars will serve as ambassadors of the White House Initiative by providing outreach and communication with their fellow students about the value of education and the Initiative as a networking resource. The Initiative serves as a platform for them to highlight their own event and network to gain resources for their event and their HBCU's. Through social media, personal and professional relationships with community-based organizations, student will share promising and proven practices that support opportunities for all young people to realize their educational and career potential. The program will provide an opportunity to participate in regional and national events, along with, web chats with Initiative staff and other professionals from a wide range of disciplines that support a spirit of engagement and personal and professional development. The appointment period will last approximately one year.
To celebrate this high achievement, Monica is currently in Washington D.C. for the Annual HBCU Week Summit attending seminars and networking. She will return to Tyler this evening.
