Alabama State University to Take Part in HBCU-9 United Sesquicentennial Celebration in Baltimore (1309 hits)

Alabama State University has partnered with eight other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in a national commemoration of the institutions’ joint sesquicentennial celebrations.

Alabama State University is one of nine Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) celebrating their 150th anniversary in 2017. Representatives from each of the colleges will gather next week on the campus of Baltimore’s Morgan State University to “exchange information and share innovations.

In addition to ASU and Morgan State, the sesquicentennial institutions are Barber-Scotia College, Fayetteville State University, Howard University, Johnson C. Smith University, Morehouse College, St. Augustine’s University and Talladega College.

ASU was founded in 1867 in Marion, Ala. by nine freedmen (all former slaves) who pooled together $500 to establish a school to educate the newly freed community of slaves in Alabama, as well as educate teachers who could go forth and educate its community of citizens.
The “HBCU-9 United Sesquicentennial Celebration” is a week-long series of events focusing on the legacy and achievements not only of the nine institutions, but also on the accomplishments of other HBCUs across the nation.

The national celebration was coordinated by a steering committee composed of representatives from each of the nine schools, which included ASU's office of Institutional Advancement.
In a statement from ASU, the University stated that “This is an exciting time in the history of these nine schools, which includes Alabama State University.” “We are all celebrating our historical significance as a part of the fabric of American history, as well as our achievements as institutions of higher learning, which are integral to our community and to all of America."
