Alabama State University is joining the state's other four-year university/college students, administrators, faculty, staff, and alumni on Thursday (Feb. 22), for the annual Higher Education Advocacy Day, as ASU students and its Mighty Marching Hornet Band marches to the Alabama Statehouse in Montgomery to advocate increased funding for higher education.
The Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets and mascots from Alabama’s other public higher education schools will participate in the student-led parade. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. with participants marching from the Cramton Bowl parking lot on Jackson Street to the Alabama Statehouse.
At 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the Statehouse, there will be a short Student Pledge Card Signing where a student leader from each university will sign a pledge card supporting a unified effort to work together to create stronger support for higher education in Alabama.
The event is different from previous years and will be highlighted by a formal higher education luncheon at noon on the Capitol lawn. The free barbecue lunch is for participants and requires an official lunch ticket.
At the luncheon, students are expected to hear from Gov. Kay Ivey, Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh, House Speaker Mac McCutcheon and others. Legislators have been invited to sit at tables with students to hear directly from them what are the most pressing needs and opportunities for higher education.
“The rally provides students a way to let legislators know they are concerned about higher education funding,” said James Oliver, ASU's band director.” ASU’s students, faculty and staff will participate alongside the diverse student population at this event.”
The Higher Education Day Rally is to remind lawmakers and elected officials of the significant impact of their decisions on students, faculty, and staff, and remind Alabama’s decision makers and opinion leaders of the value of Alabama’s public universities and the need to support public policy that elevates their impact.
