The news media is invited to cover one of the most poignant American justice and human interest stories to emerge in decades as Alabama State University's College of Liberal Arts & Social Science's Distinguished Lecture Series presents Anthony Ray Hinton on March 29, beginning at 10 a.m. in the ASU Ralph Abernathy College of Education's auditorium. The 10 a.m. lecture will be followed by a luncheon at noon in ASU's J. Garrick Hardy Student Center ballroom.

THE LECTURE ON MARCH 29
Anthony Ray Hinton, a wrongfully convicted Alabama death row inmate, will share the story of his wrongful conviction, survival on Alabama's death row for 28-years, and his decades-long journey to exoneration and freedom. It all began in 1985 with Hinton being wrongfully convicted of the murders of two fast-food restaurant managers in Birmingham that was based on the testimony of ballistics experts for the State of Alabama. Without the benefit of a competent defense expert to challenge the State’s ballistics experts, an all-white jury convicted him, and he was sentenced to death. After years of petitioning the courts to have the revolver in his case re-analyzed, independent experts who finally were allowed to present evidence on Hinton's behalf, caused the court system to rule in Hinton's favor. He is now free after 30 years thanks to his innocence and the lawyers with Montgomery's Equal Justice Institute (EJI).

His remarks at ASU will center on what occurred to him and the changes that need to be made to prevent these types of injustices from happening so innocent people are not put to death in America's prisons.

AUTHOR OF OPRAH BOOK CLUB BOOK
Hinton is the author of the acclaimed book, "The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row." His book was a selection for the Summer 2018 Oprah Book Club. Hinton's story is one that promotes the idea of grace and forgiveness while convicting the criminal justice system and the oppressive and unjust manner in which the justice system in America is orchestrated. Those with in interest in justice, fairness and forgiveness will not regret hearing Mr. Hinton's story first hand.

TICKETS: The ticket prices for the event are as follows: $10 for students; $25 to attend the lecture; $50 to attend both the lecture & the VIP luncheon; $10 additional cost for professionals obtaining continuing education "CEUs."
