The Office of Research and Grants announces Dr. Elaine Vanterpool of the Department of Biological Sciences (left) and Dr. Don Rufus Ranatunga of the Department of Chemistry as recipients of the 2013 Henry C. McBay Research Fellowship Award.

This program, open to faculty of UNCF Institutions, provides fellowships of up to $12,000 to support research in a field of the recipient's choosing.

Projects range in length from one summer, to one academic year, with starting dates between September and June.

Dr. Vanterpool's study, titled "The role of GcpMB in Staphylococcus aureus virulence" has two specific aims: (1) to determine the physical interaction of GcpMB with the major virulence factors of S. aureus; and (2) to generate and characterize a GcpMB-defective isogenic mutant of S. aureus.

Dr. Ranatunga will investigate the "Behavior and Transformation of Engineered Metal Nanoparticles in Aqueous Environments" with a focus on the adverse impacts that nanoparticles may exert on the plant and soil environment. The results of his study should provide some important and valuable insights into understanding the behavior, transformation, and phytotoxicity of some engineered nanoparticles in soil solution and suspension.
