VSU Gospel Chorale eliminated on "America’s Got Talent"

Despite a foot-stomping, hand-clapping rendition of Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” on Tuesday night, America did not choose the Virginia State University Gospel Chorale to move on to the semifinal round of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”

The 45-member chorale was the first group eliminated in Wednesday night’s results show.

“We showcased our talent to the world,” chorale business manager Michael Rainey said after the show aired, adding that this opportunity has opened many doors for chorale members. There is a chance the group could be invited back as one of two wildcard semifinalist acts.

But the future, he said, “is all in God’s hands.”

Speaking earlier in the day, Rainey said that no matter what happened, he was proud of what the group had accomplished and that it was able to show off its unique gospel style - something well known around the university’s campus and nearby Petersburg community - to a wide audience.

The chorale was among 60 acts competing for the show’s $1 million prize.

Rainey has said that the group would likely establish a chorale scholarship fund with the money.

Since its founding in 1971, the chorale has performed across the world, including at the Vatican.
