WVAS 90.7 FM Radio Consistently Wins Major Awards for its Stellar Programing & News in Alabama
Alabama State University's National Public Radio station (WVAS 90.7 FM) is becoming a lot like many of the collegiate football teams in the Deep South when it comes to winning accolades and awards; it has become something that its fans expect.
Matter of fact, and to put it in perspective, WVAS-FM has won a total of 31 ABBY-Awards since 2008 alone for its outstanding work in the radio broadcasting field.
And, this year was no disappointment.
Last Saturday (March 25), at a ceremony held in Birmingham that was replete with radio and television professionals from across the state, WVAS again made its "gold standard" with its staff taking home four important Alabama Broadcaster's Association (ABA) ABBY-Awards for "Best in Broadcasting."
The winners this year from WVAS included:
- Melanie Hogan, WVAS news reporter, who won for Best Medium Market Radio Reporter;
- Marcus Hyles, WVAS senior news correspondent, who won for Best Medium Market Regularly Scheduled Newscast;
- Renardo Smith, WVAS production technician, who won for Best Medium Market Public Service Ad for work performed on
behalf of ASU's Violence Against Women Program;
- Robb Taylor (WVAS host), Tina Joly (WVAS producer) and Melanie Hogan (WVAS reporter) were recognized for its "90.7
Perspectives Show" (an interactive weekly talk show) that won Best Live Broadcast for a station-sponsored town hall community meeting, which it held and broadcast from the street in West Montgomery about crime and law in order.
Although she didn't receive a formal award, we must compliment and recognize WVAS's station manager, Candy Capel, who has led the station for the last 10 years during its period of unprecedented annual ABBY-Awards from the ABA.
The Alabama Broadcasters Association is the voice of the broadcasting industry in Alabama and it is dedicated to protecting and enhancing broadcasting and promoting the professional status of its members, which includes radio and television.
