Award-winning journalist Tisha Powell will provide keynote

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will award approximately 620 diplomas beginning at 9 a.m. on Dec. 9, 2017, recognizing the largest class of Eagles ever to graduate in a fall commencement ceremony.

The ceremony will take place in McDougald-McLendon Arena and will feature guest speaker Tisha Powell, anchor and reporter for WTVD ABC11.

The degrees being awarded will include Ph.D.s to Dal Khatri and Quantil Melendez, who have completed requirements for the doctorate in integrated biosciences, a program created five years ago to train minority researchers. Khatri and Melendez will be the fourth and fifth doctoral candidates to complete the program. The initial integrated biosciences doctorates were given out in May 2017 and were the first doctorates to be issued by NCCU since an education degree was phased out more than 50 years ago.

Powell has been in television news for nearly two decades. A native of Louisiana, she graduated from Loyola University before going to work as a reporter, producer and anchor in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. As an anchor and reporter in the Triangle Region of N.C., Powell has covered Hurricane Karina, the Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia and the Carolina Panthers’ trip to the Super Bowl. Powell is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the Triangle Park Chapter of The Links Inc.
