University student-singers will attend a master-class coaching workshop focused on operatic repertoires

Five voice majors at Alabama State University will join talented young singers from high schools and colleges from across the region for master-class training with prominent international opera singers, which is partnered by the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra. The event is titled the Vann Vocal Institute and it will be held both Friday and Saturday (March 9 -10), at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

ASU Department of Music students Matthew Chappell (tenor), Cheyenne Gibson (soprano), Tyler Mitchell (baritone) and Zabriel Rivers (countertenor) will perform during the student master-class. The ASU student-singers had to submit a recording in order to be selected to attend this special invitation-only event.

The classes are offered in partnership with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, which helps to bring in operatic artists from across the nation to work with the student-singers.

Participants can expect vocal coaching from the various artists, as well as a public master-class session with internationally acclaimed opera singer David Cangelosi.

All events will be at Ligon Chapel-Flowers Hall at Huntingdon College. The Vann Vocal Institute, named for its benefactor (the late Roy D. Vann, a Montgomery pharmacist who loved opera), is a coaching workshop focused on operatic repertoires.
