Alabama State University’s University Choir to perform at Tuskegee University on Saturday
The University Choir at Alabama State University will be performing at the 27th annual William L. Dawson Memorial Concert on Saturday (April 7), at 6 p.m. in Logan Hall at Tuskegee University.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The event is held each year to honor the life of Tuskegee University’s former university choir director - William L. Dawson - who was a world-renowned composer and a gifted arranger at Tuskegee from 1931-1955.
ASU's new choir director - Dr. Kristofer Sanchack - lauded Tuskegee's past director.
“William Dawson was one of the musical giants who contributed to the choral arrangements of spirituals, and it is fitting that Alabama State University and our choirs should continue to be a part of this compelling and important musical tradition,” Sanchack said.
The ASU Choir and several collegiate choirs from around Alabama will each sing three pieces on the program, with choirs required to sing at least one work by William Dawson, as one of the songs required.
All of the choirs will combine at the end to perform Dawson's spiritual that is titled "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit."
