Spelman Biology Students Volunteer at the Atlanta Science Festival
Forty-Spelman Bio Atlanta Science Fair 2018 five Spelman biology students volunteered and hosted nearly 500 children and their parents during the Atlanta Science Festival on Saturday, March 24. The Spelman Bio booth explored the concepts and biology of color and color vision.
Spelman student volunteers assisted attendees in mixing primary colors to obtain new colors from colored oils and colored waters, and participants made little "lava-lamp" like necklaces.
When shaken vigorously, these necklaces resulted in a new color. Volunteers also helped visitors use microscopes to look at colors on their personal cellphones. Unlike what is learned in primary school about how colors are "made" (red paint + blue paint = purple paint), computers and phones use red, green, and blue as their primary colors.
The booth had several optical illusions on hand to explain mind-bending illusions (like the Frasier-Wilcox illusion which relies on bright contrasting colors to create the illusion of motion in a completely stationary 2-D image) to visitors of all ages.

In addition to volunteering at the booth, many Spelman students took the time to explore the festival, the various activities, and schools and businesses represented. This is the 4th year the Spelman biology department sponsored a booth at the Atlanta Science Festival.
