The "Sharing for the Shutdown" Oakwood Farms event took place on Saturday, January 19, with the primary goal of serving federal employees who have been furloughed.

Operating in the Millet Activity Center from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, 126 volunteers served approximately 1000 individuals, representing 410 households. There were 311 crates of fresh produce distributed containing 31 different items, including corn, ginger, eggplant, and cilantro, to name a few.

"The quality of this food is amazing! I can't find anything better in the (grocery store)," one female patron exclaimed. Over 800,000 federal employees and their families across the nation are being affected by the partial government shutdown. Oakwood University and Oakwood Farms wanted to let those in the Huntsville community know that they have not been forgotten.

One woman with her family tearfully shared, " I am so grateful, no one has ever done something like this for us before." It is hoped that the need for events such as this will soon be over.
